Practice

I DO NOT BEGIN WITH A WORK.

Sometimes it begins with an object. An observation. A resistance. Or a question that will not let me go.

Steffen Rolla works with a long, curved honeycomb board.

I TRY SOMETHING.

I move material, change a sentence, ask a question or bring people into a situation.

What happens cannot be fully foreseen.

Hands bend a strip of honeycomb board.

I CHANGE MY IDEA.

Sometimes the material contradicts me.

Sometimes another person changes the situation.

Sometimes I notice that my original question is no longer the same.

Two people in conversation across a table during an investigation.

I DO NOT HAVE TO MAKE EVERYTHING.

An investigation can be enough.

It can rest, continue or take a new form.

Sometimes a work comes of it.

Sometimes not.

A single fish on a plate, left as an open situation.
